CoSviG

CoSviG is a consortium company whose capital is entirely public. Founded in 1988 by the municipalities of the “Tuscan traditional geothermal area,” the company aims to promote local socio-economic development and to cooperate with local authorities by coordinating their technical and financial activities related to the use of royalties from geothermal power generation.

The company’s shareholders now include 21 entities: 14 municipalities, 4 unions of municipalities in traditional and Amiata geothermal areas, the provinces of Grosseto and Siena, and the Tuscany Region.

Our Mission

In order to complete a process of growth and local integration, the Consortium can represent the entire Tuscan geothermal area and today plays a leading role as the operational arm of its shareholders, promoting a local development model aligned with the territories’ strengths.

The Consortium also operates beyond the borders of the Tuscan geothermal areas, engaging in regional, national, and European activities aimed at promoting renewable energy and technology transfer, with a focus on geothermal energy and its direct heat uses.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN TUSCANY

History

Tuscany can be considered the world’s cradle of geothermal energy.

The advent of geothermal energy in Tuscany dates back to the early 1900s.

The first experiments to use geothermal steam to light a bulb were conducted in 1904 in Larderello, where the world’s first geothermal power plant was installed in 1913.

Power Production

The 34 active geothermal power plants in Italy are all located in the south-central parts of the Tuscany region, spanning across the provinces of Pisa, Siena, and Grosseto.

In 2022, these power plants produced approximately 6,000 GWh with a total capacity of 916 MWe. Geothermal energy currently accounts for more than 30% of the region’s energy needs. In comparison to national energy requirements, geothermal energy constitutes just under 2% (with renewables alone comprising 5%).

Direct Uses

In Tuscany, there are numerous examples of direct geothermal heat utilization. Currently, there are 21 district heating networks serving 9 municipalities and catering to approximately 10,000 private and commercial users.

Other instances of direct utilization include the integration of geothermal heat into the production processes of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agri-food sector, such as dairies, breweries, greenhouses, cured meat factories, and other industries.

Co.Svi.G. operates in two Tuscan geothermal areas: the Traditional Geothermal Area of Larderello and the Monte Amiata Geothermal Area, both located in the south-central part of the Tuscany Region.

The Consortium can effectively represent the entire Tuscan geothermal area and currently plays a leading role as the operational arm of its shareholders, promoting a local development model that aligns with the unique characteristics of the territories.

CoSviG’s development model has facilitated the promotion of the territory, highlighting its distinctive features through initiatives focused on renewable energy sources (RES), energy conservation, and efficiency while respecting local communities, their traditions, and vocations. In addition to promoting RES plants and energy efficiency measures through research, innovation, and technology transfer activities, CoSviG aims to establish a local development system that fosters integrated and homogeneous growth models.

Co.Svi.G’s Roadmap to promote and support the Sustainable Development of Tuscan Geothermal Areas

The development model that CoSviG is experiencing in Tuscany is based on:

Promotion of renewables, closely linked to local peculiarities and with focus on geothermal energy and its direct heat uses;Territorial marketing projects, territorial promotion and investment attraction;
Promotion and investments in commercial and tourism sector and enhancement of rural economy;
Promotion the matching and connection amongst the local geothermal operators fostering technological transfer, innovation and new business opportunities;
Management of structures for applied research and for the technology transfer on renewables and energy efficiency, in order to preserve an high local know-how level on energy related issues;
Communication and dissemination activities on geothermal energy and renewables.

As regards infrastructures, the Consortium manages two laboratories: CEGLab – Laboratory of the Centre of Excellence for Geothermal Energy of Larderello and SestaLab – Laboratories of the test area of Sesta.

Our Local Projects

Renewable Energy Food Community (CCER)

In 2009 Co.Svi.G., Slow Food Toscana and Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity funded Renewable Energy Food Community (CCER) consisting of agrifood farmers and producing companies using renewable energy and Tuscan raw materials.

Microalgae Spirulina Pilot Plant

In 2017 Co.Svi.G. and Enel Green Power signed an agreement to support one-year experimental cultivation of the cyanobacteria Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) in a geothermal environment. Cultivations was using waste heat and CO2 from a geothermal power plant.

Geotermia News

 

Co.Svi.G. draft the communication channel Geotermia News in order to provide information and news on geothermal energy and renewables. Geotermia News now reach the main tuscan geothermal sector operators, technology providers and stakeholder.

The Consortium also works outside borders of Tuscan geothermal areas, being involved in activities at Regional, National, European and International level.

At regional level, Co.Svi.G. is the managing body of the Technology Cluster on Energy and Green Economy (DTE²V) of the Tuscany Region that groups about 200 subjects operating within the tuscan energy and green economy sectors. The final aim of the DTE²V is indeed to increase competitiveness of Tuscan companies in energy and green economy sectors by promoting industrial research and the technology transfer.

At national and international level, Co.Svi.G. participate in international projects on research and technology development in geothermal and works closely with the main public institutions and stakeholder from research sector, companies, civil society organizations and citizens in order to promote and disseminate initiatives linked to the achievement of the climate and energy targets objectives provided for European Green Deal.

SESTALab

SestaLab – Laboratories of the test area of Sesta is one of worlds’ leading laboratory for the gas turbine combustors “full scale testing”.

CEGLab

CEGLab – Laboratory of the Centre of Excellence for Geothermal Energy of Larderello is a centre of advanced expertise in geothermal energy.

It is aimed at contributing to the dissemination of innovation and technology transfer, to promote the use of heat from underground and its direct uses

DTE²V – Technology Cluster on Energy and Green Economy of the Tuscany Region

Since 2016, Co.Svi.G. is the managing body of the Technology Cluster on Energy and Green Economy (DTE²V) of the Tuscany Region.

DTE²V is an organization of independent Economic and Research operators coordinated through a public-private governance, which was established by the Region of Tuscany. The main aim of the cluster is to increase the competitiveness of Tuscan companies operating within the Energy and Green Economy sectors and to promote the industrial research and technology transfer in these fields. The DTE²V consists currently of around 200 members, including leading companies form the energy sector and operating Tuscany, MSMEs, Start Ups, Universities, Research Centres, Laboratories, Trade Associations, Technology and Innovation Networks and Non-Profit groups.

The DTE²V acts, therefore, as a bridge between research and companies, in order to promote their innovation capacities and competitiveness in the market.

DTE²V Cluster support the launch and development of cooperation networks, facilitating technology transfer, access to national programmes and engaging members into actively collaborating and sharing expertise and Know How pursuing innovation

Regarding the strategic operating plan, the DTE²V works on 4 main operational objectives:

  1. Technology dissemination: technology Forecast and Foresight Analysis to better understand and predict future developments of markets and technologies, within the Energy sector at local, regional, national and international level;
  2. Business Matching/Matchmaking (B2B, R2B, F2B): to promote the matching and connection amongst economic operators. Its objective is to foster technological innovation, adoption of better marketing strategies and to approach to new potential markets and business opportunities;
  3. Creation and enhancement of know-how and professional expertise within each reference sector;
  4. Search for funding opportunities for innovation: to support the dissemination of financing opportunities, improve admission rates and foster the Regional systems towards even more potential resources, for better industrial policies.

Co.Svi.G.-DTE²V works closely with the main public institutions and stakeholder from research sector, companies, civil society organizations and citizens in order to promote and disseminate initiatives linked to the achievement of the climate and energy targets objectives provided for European Green Deal.

INTER-CLUSTER COLLABORATION FOR CARBON MANAGEMENT

The general objective of the PROJECT is to increase the capacities of Civil Society Organisations on Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and Carbon Management to support the EU Deal on achieving its targets.

WEB-SITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

COMPASS – Sustainable and cost-efficient Concepts enabling green power production from supercritical / Superhot geothermal wells

The COMPASS project is inspired by global efforts to improve utilization of geothermal resources by enlarging production fields downwards.

GEO ENERGY EUROPE 2 – Geo-Energy for the XXIst Century

The objective of the GEO ENERGY EUROPE 2 project proposal is to assist European GEOTHERMAL Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to win work in third country markets.

GEOSMART – Technologies for geothermal to enhance competitiveness in smart and flexible operation

In GeoSmart, we propose to combine thermal energy storages with flexible ORC solutions to provide a highly flexible operational capability of a geothermal installation.

GEOENVI – Tackling the environmental concerns for deploying geothermal energy in Europe

The objective of the GEOENVI project was to answer environmental concerns in terms of both impacts and risks, by first setting an adapted methodology for assessing environment impacts to the project developers, and by assessing the environmental impacts and risks of geothermal projects operational or in development in Europe.

GEODH – Geothermal District Heating

The GeoDH project aimed to overcome the non-technical barriers to the development of Geothermal District heating in 14 european countries.

GEOCOM – Geothermal Communities demonstrating the cascading use of geothermal energy for district heating with small scale RES integration and retrofitting measures

The GEOCOM project  demonstrated the best available technologies in the use of geothermal energy combined with innovativ energy-efficiency measures and integration of other renewable energy sources at three different pilot sites (Hungary, Slovakia and Italy).
